Looking out for our Speedy Hire family

Poor mental health and wellbeing is a major issue in the construction industry, so it is a key priority of our ‘Including Everyone’ pillar.  We have a Wellbeing Affinity Group who use the results of our People First survey to deliver a calendar of wellbeing initiatives, campaigns and events promoting awareness and support for colleagues’ physical, mental and financial health.

We work with the Lighthouse Club, a charity that provides emotional, physical and financial support to construction workers and their families to build awareness around mental health wellbeing and delivered training to our managers. We have 90 volunteer Mental Health First Aiders across Speedy Hire to support our colleagues.  Our free-to-use employee assistance programme also provides online CBT, mindfulness for mental health, a virtual gym, and sleep and nutrition advice.

We also continue to make progress on rolling out our ‘Speedy Work Life Balance’ to  85% of our staff offering greater flexibility to reduce core, contracted hours and identify more balanced work patterns.

Mental Strength with Ricky Hatton

At our recent Speedy Live Expo, we heard from former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton as he discusses overcoming his darkest days. Ricky openly talks how having experienced the dizzying highs of world title wins in front of thousands in packed arenas, defeat hit Ricky hard, leading to a downward spiral. This spiral resulted in estrangement from his parents, fallouts with close friends, and relationship breakdowns. Learn about Ricky’s long road back to recovery and how thankful he is to have taken the step to talk to someone. He credits these conversations with helping to save his life.
