A Place Where I Can Be Me
At Speedy Hire we promote diversity, equity and inclusion (‘DEI’) at all levels of our business, to better equip our business for the future and supporting social mobility by providing fair opportunities for people from all backgrounds.
Our work has included refreshed policies and procedures, dedicated training, talks, events and communications, and collaborations with organisations such as Women in Construction and Engineering. Our People Like Us (‘PLUS’) colleague-led, affinity networks continue to thrive, supporting the delivery of our social value objectives in relation to race and ethnicity, wellbeing and gender balance.
As we continue our work to increase female representation from 22% to achieve our target of 30% women by 2030, Speedy Hire has adopted the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles (UN WEP) and is one of 197 UK signatories of the UN Global Compact to have completed the nine-month Target Gender Equality programme.

Women in Construction
Getting more women into hire and construction has historically been challenging. However, perceptions are changing and more women are developing fantastic careers in these industries. Watch as our Chief People Officer, Ellie Armour and our People Policy, Governance and Compliance Manager, Angela Hughes, discuss in more detail about the steps we’ve taken at Speedy Hire to encourage women to join the hire industry and make a significant impact upon our business.

Since becoming a signatory of the UN WEP, our gender score has more than tripled, demonstrating the hard work and commitment of our gender affinity group. We are proud that our work to drive social value through the United Nations Target Gender Equality programme featured as a case study in a Supply Chain Sustainability School (SCSS) webinar in December 2023, focused on social value initiatives outside of the mainstream.
Shaping the females leaders of tomorrow
Part of our ambition to reach 30% of women in the workforce by 2030 is to increase female representation in leadership. Through our Women in Leadership development programme, we are equipping future leaders with the skills, mindset and strategies needed to advance their careers. These programmes offer development pathways for multiple levels of the business, supporting female colleagues in progressing into management and senior roles. We showcased Women in Leadership during National Apprenticeship Week 2025, sharing success stories and career pathways to inspire future female leaders. For more information, see our website
DEI in the supply chain
To continue our journey, we are embedding our DEI values through our supply chain working with MSMEs (‘Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises’), VCSEs (‘Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprises’) and female and ethnic minority-owned businesses.
Gender pay gap
Our gender pay gap has increased slightly in FY2024. Despite the increase, Speedy Hire gender pay gap remains well below the UK national median of 14.3% and the construction industry average of 16.8%. Our full gender pay gap report is available here.
