Speedy Hire Supports the Lost City Campaign by On The Tools
18 November 2024

At Speedy Hire, we recognise the unique challenges faced by the construction industry and the critical impact these have on the mental health of our workforce.
The tragic reality is that over the past decade, more than 7,000 construction workers have died by suicide – a devastating statistic equivalent to the workforce required to build an entire city.
The construction industry has a suicide rate four times the national average, highlighting a crisis that is too often overlooked outside our sector. This silent epidemic not only impacts individuals but also their families, colleagues, and the very fabric of the construction community.
The Lost City Campaign visualises the enormity of this crisis by showing the construction projects that could have been built by those we have lost. It is a poignant and powerful way to highlight the human cost of a lack of mental health awareness and support within our industry.
Why are we driving change in the Industry?
Speedy Hire is committed to leading by example in supporting mental health initiatives across the construction sector. By partnering with the Lost City Campaign, we aim to:
- Raise Awareness: Shine a light on the scale of the crisis and break the stigma and taboo surrounding mental health discussions, predominantly between men.
- Foster Supportive Environments: Promote open conversations and encourage help-seeking behaviour across teams.
- Champion Change: Advocate for a healthier, more resilient industry where mental wellbeing is prioritised.
We’re proud to be working alongside On The Tools Group to lead meaningful change in the construction industry through our support of the Lost City Campaign. Together, we’re striving to raise awareness of the devastating impact of suicide within our sector and drive a culture shift towards prioritising mental health and wellbeing.
By uniting our efforts, we can amplify the message, provide vital support, and inspire others to take action.
