London Light Freight River Trial
14 March 2023Working with Cross River Partnership, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Port of London Authority, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, Lyreco UK and Ireland, Pedal Me and Grid Smarter Cities, Speedy Hire has a goal of achieving low-emission deliveries, removing congestion on London roads, and cutting the time on the road by 50%.
At Speedy Hire, we regularly deliver equipment across London. However, heavy traffic, congestion charges, and environmental concerns make road deliveries slower, more expensive, and less sustainable. We needed a smarter way to move goods into central London.
Speedy Hire took part in a trial to transport equipment using the River Thames instead of roads. Equipment was loaded onto an electric truck by our team at Erith Depot and delivered to Dartford International Ferry Terminal.
The equipment was then moved along the river with the support of our logistics partner. Final delivery was completed using low-emission methods where needed to central London locations.
The trial has shown that the river can enable fast, efficient and consistent deliveries more sustainably. At Speedy Hire, we see this as a strong step toward reducing our carbon footprint and improving how we deliver in busy cities.
