Vibration White Finger, also known as Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome, can lead to pain and long-term damage to hands and muscles. This is a major concern where high vibration equipment such as power tools are used. Hand Arm Vibration is clearly a complex area and requires a holistic approach in order to effectively manage the issue. The following areas are being addressed as part of Speedy's strategy for 'Getting To Grips with Hand Arm Vibration.'
Employers will have a duty because of the 'Control of Vibration at Work 2005' regulations. These require steps to be taken to reduce vibration exposure; assess risks from vibration and then take measures to reduce these risks. Specifically, they must:
The regulations require that the EAV and ELV be measured as the sum of the vibration in 3 axes: the Vibration Total Value. (These replace the current method of measuring via the dominant axis, and the ELV of 2.8m/s2.).
Employers must provide employees with information and training on the methods of controlling these risks. To assist, Speedy has been active along with major contractors, manufacturers and trade associations and have produced communications material and information under the theme of 'Safety From The Ground Up' to raise awareness at site level. And have developed training courses for operatives and supervisors.
Speedy are working closely with our suppliers to ensure that independent "real-life" data is provided for all of the products within our range. Link through to the OPERC website which contains the most up-to-date data.
Speedy invests over £60m pa in new tools and equipment, providing you with the most modern and reliable fleet. Our product development team works closely with manufacturers to identify optimal products, for example low vibration technology, or high productivity tools. Speedy also provides a comprehensive range of consumables. The tools and equipment are regularly maintained and serviced to manufacturers specifications and are independently checked by 'mystery shoppers'.
All customer facing Speedy personnel are trained in the new regulations. Speedy can provide toolbox talks on the new regulations aimed at increasing the awareness at the site level.
Speedy have developed a range of communication material aimed at raising awareness of Hand Arm Vibration. This material has been produced in consultation with major contractors, manufacturers and the HSE.
The materials have been designed to appeal to busy site operatives and managers using straight-forward language and humour. Below is a selection of the materials in pdf format along with other useful reference material. Should you be interested in copies of any of this material please email our customer services department, customerservices@speedyhire.com or call them on 0845 606 6886.
