Speedy provides green space
Environmental concerns continue to climb the agenda, and firms are eager to demonstrate their green credentials. At the same time, rising energy costs are causing businesses to think about how they can make their operations more energy-efficient.
The Challenge
The environmental performance of on-site accommodation in particular is a growing concern for construction firms.
The Solution
Working in partnership with Simons Group, designer Ultra Secure and environmental specialist Frankham Consultancy, Speedy developed the ENVIRO-CABIN - a temporary accommodation unit designed to the same environmental performance targets as a permanent commercial building.
The on-site unit reduces the carbon footprint of traditional short-term accommodation by more than 50 percent and its increased energy efficiency significantly reduces energy costs for users.
The units, which can be double stacked, incorporate improved heating and insulation, double glazing, improved construction detail and energy efficient lighting, while water usage reduction solutions have been fitted to toilet units.
The first of the units were delivered in January 2008 to the £45m Marriotts Close development in Witney where a new retail, leisure and residential quarter is being created, including a new cinema and 138 new homes.
Frank Conway, project manager at Simons Group, said: "While on-site accommodation is not the most energy consuming aspect of a construction project, it is something we have direct control over and we should therefore ensure it is as energy efficient as possible.
"Speedy's invaluable contribution in developing the ENVIRO-CABIN has allowed us to make a major step in the right direction towards our environmental goals."
